Airport Week starts at GAIA

 

The inaugural “Airport Week” at Grantley Adams International Airport took flight on Monday October 15 with an opening ceremony at Terminal One.  The week marks the 74^th anniversary of the landing of the first commercial flight at Seawell Airport on October 19^th, 1938.

Chief Executive Officer of GAIA Inc., David Barrow in declaring the week opened, challenged the airport community to up its game in delivering customer service. He said this was necessary if Barbados was to maintain and see future growth, particularly in the face of potentially increasing regional competition.

“We cannot not afford to rest on our laurels because the international travellers are coming to Barbados as a destination and the airport is the only gateway into and out of the country It is imperative that Barbadians recognize, that it is what the country delivers to the world as a destination, that makes it competitive and attractive,” he emphasized.

Chairman of the Organising Committee, Keith Goddard told those gathered that the objective of Airport Week was to design to bring about greater unity among the thousands of airport employees, a goal which was already beginning to bear fruit with the recent introduction of the GAIA 20/20 Cricket tournament, now in its third week.

During the week, employees can tour the Fire station and Control Tower and receive free blood pressure checks from the Ambulance Centre. A dominoes competition, Customer Appreciation Day, Airport Lime and Fun Day also form part of the activities.
